Everyone remember Mythos? You know, that MMO that everyone was jazzed about playing and then disappeared in the mystical land of grind, otherwise known as Korea. Well, it's resurfaced at last in what looks to be the bastard offspring of World of Warcraft and Torchlight.Redbana announced today that the action RPG will allow the company to expand on its library of free-to-play online games.
“We’re privileged to be able to take the helm of this ambitious and highly-regarded project,” said Young Rok Park, CEO of Redbana. “We launched Redbana with Audition, and are now diversifying our offering with Mythos. Our vision is to deliver a diverse selection of high quality games to the North American market.”
For those of you at home thinking there will be a test after this, the Mythos beta was closed in 2008 after Flagship Studios — the makers of the abysmal Hellgate: London — closed its doors. HanbitSoft acquired the IP and Redbana was selected to oversee the North American launch and operations.
The game is currently in closed beta in South Korea. The next 16 to 18 months will be a busy time for the action RPG genre. Torchlight will be introducing its online multiplayer version, as well as the coming of Blizzard's god child, Diablo 3. Stiff competition, indeed.
Mythos will need to do something other than just look like a World of Warcraft-styled, action RPG knock-off. Torchlight already fills that niche. Wait, what? I'm sorry, Runic. I love Torchlight. I really do.
